Superior Homes Kenya has broken ground for the construction of a KSHS 350 million modern roadside stopover complex at Sultan Hamud town along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. This complex, known as “Supastop,” is designed to serve as a comprehensive rest area for long-distance truck drivers, addressing the need for safe and secure resting points.
Supastop will feature a range of modern amenities for long-distance transit drivers, including secure parking, a fuel station, affordable accommodation, various eateries, convenience stores, clean restrooms, showers, prayer rooms, and a health facility, all within a single development. Additionally, it will offer services such as truck and vehicle maintenance and repair, driver training, and logistics support.
Superior Homes aims to fill the gap in the Kenyan market by providing self-contained service and rest areas for truck drivers along different transit routes in the country. The Sultan Hamud project is the pilot for an additional 30 proposed locations along the Northern Corridor.
Sultan Hamud is a significant parking spot for long-distance trucks, with approximately 300 trucks parking along the roadside every night. It is strategically located between Mtito Andei and Salama, covering a 145 km stretch. However, it has lacked suitable accommodation facilities for long-distance transit drivers.
During the launch ceremony, Hon. Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, Governor of Makueni County, praised Superior Homes Kenya for this initiative, emphasizing that addressing driver fatigue is critical for road safety.
Superior Homes Kenya CEO, Shiv Arora, highlighted the pressing need for safe rest stops and their commitment to improving road safety. He also mentioned the project’s positive impact on local communities by creating jobs in construction, operations, and maintenance.
The completion date for the project is set for the end of 2023, and it is expected to contribute to reducing road accidents involving long-distance heavy commercial vehicles and passenger buses.
The initiative aligns with the International Labour Organization’s Hours of Work and Rest Periods (Road Transport) Convention, 1979, which outlines guidelines for truck drivers’ work hours and rest periods.
